Political activity abroad and imprisonment
Al-Saadi was in charge of handling the file of Libya's relations with a number of Arab and western countries, such as: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Italy, Canada, France, and Australia. These efforts yielded positive results on several levels. On the political level, for instance, Saudi Arabia mediated between Libya and the United States to resolve the Lockerbie affair. Also, improving relations with Italy led to it apologizing for the suffering inflicted in Libya during the Italian colonization, and subsequently, a huge compensation contract was signed worth approximately ten billion euros.
Al-Saadi was first imprisoned in Niger for three years, and he later endured another seven-years imprisonment in Libya.
Al-Saadi left to Niger in 2011 following the February events. There, he established a political opposition movement, which disturbed the authorities in Libya, who demanded that Niger extradite him, and filed an indictment against him. Indeed, the Nigerien government did so, and tried him on charges of murder, of which he was later acquitted, but was kept in jail, only to be freed three years after the sentence.
Despite the group's insistence on prolonging his imprisonment for as long as possible, a militia operating on Libyan soil freed him and all the other inmates in al-Hadba jail where he was detained, and took him to another prison in the center of Tripoli, where they treated him well. When the court acquitted him of the murder charge several months later, the group refrained from releasing him immediately due to his sensitive position. Then, a third militia, led by a Salafi named Abdul Raouf Kara, raided the place and took him to Mitiga Airport, where he was treated decently.
He was eventually released on September 6, 2021 and left Libya and went abroad.
